This lot is accompanied with a letter from Jasper Francis Cropsey dated Nov, 1, 1897 addressed to John Wickliffe Kitchell, an early owner of the work, wherein Cropsey recounts his visit to the falls in 1852, the year the painting was completed.

This lot is accompanied with a letter from Jasper Francis Cropsey dated Nov, 1, 1897 addressed to John Wickliffe Kitchell, an early owner of the work, wherein Cropsey recounts his visit to the falls in 1852, the year the painting was completed.

In the upper left quadrant towards the center there is a "n" shaped repaired tear approximately 1 1/2 x 3 inches in size. Below that, in the foreground there is a line of inpainting running vertically for approximately 2 inches. A few small spots of inpainting can also be found at the center of the top edge. The work has been glue relined and the surface is clean and stable.
