Napoleonic Prisoner-of-War Model of a British Ship of the Line
Circa 1800.
The hull planked in bone and pinned over a solid wood plug, with an ebony waist and gun port strakes which are ribbed; the hull is cut and pierced for 70 cannons, with 60 turned metal guns fitted to the lower decks; the deck planked in bone with ebony inlays; with a carved bone figurehead of an eagle, supported by a bone stem and head rails; the quarter galleries and the transom simply carved and pierced with polychrome details; the flush deck details include anchors, pin and fife rails, stove pipe, capstan, open waist, deck grates, ladders, railings, double wheel and other details; the vessel rigged with a bow-sprit and three masts, yards with stuns'l booms, standing and running rigging which turn through bone turning blocks and deadeyes; all mounted on a pair of bone cradles, on a mahogany board.

There is some oxidation of the pins holding the bone planking to the hull, the model is slightly dirty and would benefit from a light cleaning. There is a notch at the center of the keel, which is possibly from a gun retraction pull. There are several other minor cracks and discoloration commensurate with the age and material used. There are several generations of rigging, some of which needs restoration. The spars, which appear out of line and canted, can be re-aligned by a steady hand.

Held in Doyle's Boston gallery and livestreamed on Doyle.com, the Boston Collects auction featured a wide range of artwork, furniture, Americana, silver, decorative arts and jewelry from collections and estates in the New England area and beyond.
Featured in the sale was Property from the Private Collection of Sylvia Napier. A Massachusetts native, Sylvia lived her life abroad, traveling the world as a collector and antiques dealer. Sylvia owned a beautifully eclectic and world-renowned antiques shop on Kings Road in London that showcased art and antiques from Asia and Europe. Sylvia kept many beloved items in her personal collection, which then travelled to her grand 17th century home in Arles, France and ultimately her historic 1770s house in Weston, Massachusetts. Her collection was assembled with care, love and a discerning eye.
