NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's auction of The Chimneys: The Estate of Allan Goldman on March 26, 2025 saw international competition drive exceptional prices. This landmark, single-owner sale presented the over 200 lots of exceptional English and Continental furniture, decorations and paintings from The Chimneys, the historic mansion of real estate investor Allan Goldman (1943-2022) in Mill Neck on Long Island’s Gold Coast.
The Collection
Decorated by the renowned New York design firm of Cullman & Kravis, The Chimneys showcased a remarkable collection of elegant furniture and decorations providing a captivating glimpse into the opulent Gatsby era of the 1920s when the home was constructed. Assembled through acquisitions from prominent dealers and at auction, the collection featured an elegant George II giltwood sofa, circa 1730. Trans-Atlantic interest in the sofa sent the bidding far beyond its $10,000-15,000 estimate, realizing an exceptionally strong $28,800.
Paintings in the collection were highlighted by a 16th century Flemish School oil on panel depicting Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery (John 8: 3-11) estimated $5,000-8,000 that soared to $28,800. The painting is closely related to an original work by Lorenzo Lotto now in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris. A large-scale work by American artist Frank C. Penfold (1849-1921) also outperformed expectations. Estimated at $10,000-15,000, the lovely river view titled The Ferry at Longpré achieved an impressive $20,480.
The Chimneys
Built in 1928 for Charles Porter Wilson, chairman of the A&P supermarkets, The Chimneys was designed by architect Charles Mansfield Hart (1886-1968) of Hart & Shape. A picturesque Tudor country house, The Chimneys featured baronial interiors on a grand scale with elegant reception rooms, elaborate plaster ceilings, walnut paneling and numerous marble fireplaces. Educated at Pratt Institute, Charles Mansfield Hart was also the architect of Hillwood, the 70-room Tudor-style mansion designed for E.F. Hutton and Marjorie Merriweather Post in nearby Brookville, as well as the magnificent Beaux Arts style Freeport Memorial Library in Freeport, Long Island.
Allan Goldman
Allan Goldman was a distinguished real estate investor and a principal of Solil Management, a family firm that controlled one of New York City’s largest private real estate portfolios. Established by his father, the legendary investor Sol Goldman, Solil Management was a leading real estate powerhouse whose holdings at one point spanned nearly 1,900 commercial and residential properties, including the iconic Chrysler Building. Allan’s mother was the prominent philanthropist Lillian Goldman, a generous benefactor of such institutions as the Alzheimer's Association, the Parkinson's Foundation and the Yale Law School, whose library bears her name. Beyond his work at Solil, Allan was deeply committed to philanthropy, supporting organizations like City Harvest and Lighthouse for the Blind, as well as numerous causes through the Goldman family charitable trusts. An avid coin collector and former track athlete, Allan was known for his generosity, humor and kindness. He divided his time between homes in Manalapan, Florida, and New York City, but found the greatest joy at his beloved Long Island estate, The Chimneys.
