Pablo Picasso

Spanish, 1881-1973

Born in Spain in 1881, Pablo Picasso became one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, revolutionizing the direction of modern art. He studied formally in Barcelona and Madrid before relocating to Paris, where he spent most of his professional life. Over a career spanning seven decades, Picasso produced more than 50,000 works across painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, printmaking, and stage design.

He is best known as the co-founder of Cubism, developed with Georges Braque, which challenged traditional perspectives and introduced a new visual language built from fragmented forms. He experimented with collage, played a key role in the development of modern sculpture, and moved fluently between styles—from the melancholy Blue Period and vibrant Rose Period to the political power of Guernica1937.

Picasso’s work is marked by constant reinvention and deep personal expression. His influence extends far beyond visual art, shaping generations of artists and redefining the role of the artist in society. He remains one of the most prolific and transformative figures in the history of modern art.
