Lot 1118
OSSORIO, ALFONSO Recovery: The Hospital Drawings of Alfonso Ossorio. January 17 to February 8, 1989. December 3 to 5, 1990.
New York: Center for Book Arts, 1995. First edition, one of 100 copies, signed by the participants: Richard Minsky, Rose Slivka, B.H. Friedman, Ted Dragon and Mike Solomon. Publisher's quarter blue morocco, red cloth sides. 16 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches (42 x 42 cm); title-leaf; 42 plates in window mount, printed on Permalife paper, each mounted and matted in Stonehenge paper, authenticated in the margin with the seal of the Ossorio Foundation; 4 ff. Minor mark to front cover, else fine.
Alfonso A. Ossorio, the Philippines-born abstract expressionist artist, produced this series of drawings while in failing health, during two hospitalizations. Given some markers and watercolor paper, he produced the series of drawings reproduced here. He died on the last day of the second period in hospital, making this a remarkable and literal testament to his work. The drawings are vivid and powerful expressions of an artist who seems to have been fully aware of his imminent mortality.
