[CHINA] Album of mounted gelatin silver prints of Chinese street scenes, portraits, military views etc.
Likely Tientsin [Tianjin], Hebei Province, China, 1916-1918. Cloth-bound album with lacquer covers. 10 3/8 x 8 1/4 inches (26 x 20.5 cm); 25 guarded mounts with approximately 150 photographs, ranging from roughly 2 3/8 x 1 5/8 inches (62 x 40 mm) or the reverse, these including some particularly gruesome views of executions, to 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches (135 x 185 mm). Spine lacking, some minor toning, soiling and wear, some mounts with ink annotations.
The album appears to have been prepared by Otto Klotz, who was stationed at Chinwangtao [Qinhuangdao] with the 15th U.S. Infantry; a commission as a sergeant, his naturalization papers and a small photographic medallion that we assume to be Klotz standing with a member of the Chinese military are included. The 15th U.S. Infantry were in Tientsin from January of 1912 (and continued to be part of the US presence until 1938, but these images are from the early part of their mission).
