Oblong, in original printed linen cloth, with laid in preface volume sewn in original printed paper wrappers. 9 5/8 x 13 inches (24.5 x 33 cm); facsimile volume: entirely illustrated, unpaginated; preface volume: [8] pp, frontispiece. Facsimile volume with lightly toned spine, slight bow to boards, overopened in one spot, toning and two spots of dampstaining to endpapers, preface volume's wrapper unevenly toned.
A facsimile sketchbook faithfully reproducing one that Degas would draw in during after-dinner conversation at his friend, the author and playwright, Ludovic Halévy's house. Ludovic's son Daniel wrote a preface for the sketches where he recounts his childhood memories of the evenings. The original sketchbook is now in the collection of the Getty Museum (object number 95.GD.35).
