LYNES, GEORGE PLATT (1907-1955)
Group of seven vintage gelatin silver prints from the 1948 Balanchine Orpheus
, each approximately 9 x 7 1/2 inches (230 x 185 mm) or the reverse, several with the hand stamps on the verso of George Platt Lynes. The group generally in fine condition, framed.
The Ballet Orpheus was commissioned from Stravinsky by the Ballet Society. It was choreographed by George Balanchine, with props designed by Isamu Noguchi. Most of the present images are of the lead dancers, Nicholas Magallanes and Francisco Moncion. It was this ballet that led to the invitation of the Society to become the permanent ballet company of the City Center of Music and Drama, under its new name, the New York City Ballet.
