MEYERBEER, GIACOMO
Autograph letter signed.
Berlin: 2 December 1837. Two ff. written in German in dark brown ink on pale blue paper with the composer's monogram in blind, from a single folded sheet: the letter on the recto and verso of the first leaf, the second leaf the integral address leaf and cover, traces of an adhered seal. Page size 8 3/4 x 7 1/8 inches (22 x 18 cm), 29 lines, plus salutation and felicitation, addressed to Privy Councillor Lichtenstein. Usual folds, minor separation at foot of central fold.
A lengthy letter, most likely to Karl August Ludwig von Lichtenstein, the first opera singer, composer librettist and director of the Dessau Court Opera, appointed by Prince Leopold III. The letter is addressed to Lichtenstein by his honorifics, but the content, discussing the reason for delays in the delivery of some sheets of music, and apologizing for the fact that he will not be able to deliver them promptly because of the press of work, supports the assumption that this letter was to a fellow musician. Accompanied by a full translation.
