ANGEL, MARIE. The Seasons. Calligraphic manuscript on vellum, colophon leaf lettered "Marie Angel pinxit et scripsit 1956" with a watercolor vignette. Original cream laced vellum, the upper cover with a design of a goldfinch feather rendered in ink and colors, slipcased. 10 x 7 1/4 inches (25.5 x 28.5 cm); 16 vellum ff. (including blanks): dedication leaf ("To dear Edith from Alistair 1956"); title leaf; five two-page spreads of rural scenes; ten pages of poems by Hopkins, De La Mare, Tennyson and others written in Angel's exquisite italic hand, with initials ornamented with depictions of British birds; and colophon leaf. In fine condition. Ms. Angel has laid-in to the front a list of the poets and poems written out on paper.
Marie Angel (1923-2010) was one of the foremost British calligraphers and illustrators, producing manuscripts with superb penmanship and incredibly delicate single-hair brush miniatures. Her original work is rare on the market, though institutionally Harvard, the Hunt Botanical Institute, the Victoria and Albert and others hold examples.
