George III Black and Gilt-Japanned and Satinwood Secretaire Cabinet
First half 19th century

After a design by Thomas Sheraton, 1793, the galleried top mounted with corner finials above a conforming case fitted a spring-released frieze drawer over a fall front opening to a baize-lined writing surface and a line-inlaid satinwood interior with a prospect door centering short and long drawers, all over a spring-loaded frieze drawer, the whole flanked by serpentine sides with hinged drawers centering galleried shelves, on ring-turned legs joined by a concave-fronted galleried platform stretcher and ending in tapering feet.

Overall good condition commensurate with age and use, now with later varnish over japanning, with craquelure, rubbing and losses, minor losses to arcaded gallery, repaired break to left front finial, age cracks to top behind gallery, fall front with age cracks and subsequent losses to japanning, interior with painted line decoration throughout, not line-inlaid, minor losses to arcaded galleried side shelves, losses to japanning of both drawers below, shrinkage cracks to galleried shelf between legs, scuffs to legs and feet.

NEW YORK, NY -- International competition drove strong results at Doyle's auction of Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Prints on January 25, 2024. The sale showcased a wide range of works including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious subjects by European artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century.
Wojciech Kossak (1856-1942) was a member of a celebrated Polish family of artists who specialized in equestrian subjects and scenes from military history. The sale featured a remarkable work depicting an historic victory of the fabled German Black Hussars over a Russian artillery unit, probably during the Seven Years’ War. Competitive bidding drove this painting to $28,800, more than doubling its estimate.
François Boucher‘s paintings and drawings are prized for their idyllic evocations of the French rococo style. Achieving an exceptional $25,600 was a lovely chalk drawing of a lady holding a birdcage. It was clearly executed by an artist who knew Boucher's style intimately, probably a member of his immediate circle.
