[MAP--WORLD]
DANCKERTS, CORNELIS. De Werelt Caart. Amsterdam: Cornelis Dankerts, [circa 1700 or later]. Engraved map, hand colored, central fold, matted. The sheet measures 15 3/4 x 21 1/4 inches (40 x 54 cm). Three repaired tears in margins, a few areas of pale toning.
Cornelis Danckert's double hemisphere world map's geography is an updated version of one by his father, Cornelis I. He added the new French discoveries along the Mississippi and Tasman's discoveries in Australia, but retains the cartographic misconception of California as an island. Danckerts also added a wealth of scientific information to adorn his map's margins. These diagrams show the orbits of the planets, an armillary sphere, and charts of eclipses, the equator and the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. There are also two small inset maps showing northern and southern polar projections.
