Nevers Faïence Large Mythological Wine Cistern
Circa 1660-1680
Estate / Collection: French Faïence from the Estate of Sidney R. Knafel sold to benefit the Detroit Institute of Arts
Slightly later mounted with a pewter spigot, modeled as a baluster form ewer with angled everted spout and rope-twist handle, painted in shades of blue, green, yellow, ochre and iron-red with a large figure of Bacchus seated on a barrel below the spout, a wine goblet in his raised left hand, a carafe in his right, reserved within a surround of fruiting vine, Diana with a winged putto and Mercury holding a caduceus flanking the handle issuing from a mask terminal, the spigot issuing from a mask terminal inset at a later date.
Height 21 5/8 inches (55 cm) high overall
It is likely that the ewer was mounted with a spigot, as the large size and associated weight made it impossible to pour wine properly.
Chateau Sociando-Mallet in the Médoc region of Bordeaux has been growing wine grapes since the mid-seventeenth century, with records as early as 1633 noting ownership by a Basque family, the Sossiondo (Jancis Robinson, "A marvel in the Médoc," Financial Times, 26 September 2009).

Spout possibly restored, a crack spiraling up front the footrim around the body with possible restoration, rub and loss to glaze on lion mask at base of handle, chips to glaze along footrim.

NEW YORK, NY -- International competition drove strong results at Doyle's auction of Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & Prints on January 25, 2024. The sale showcased a wide range of works including landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious subjects by European artists from the Renaissance through the 19th century.
Wojciech Kossak (1856-1942) was a member of a celebrated Polish family of artists who specialized in equestrian subjects and scenes from military history. The sale featured a remarkable work depicting an historic victory of the fabled German Black Hussars over a Russian artillery unit, probably during the Seven Years’ War. Competitive bidding drove this painting to $28,800, more than doubling its estimate.
François Boucher‘s paintings and drawings are prized for their idyllic evocations of the French rococo style. Achieving an exceptional $25,600 was a lovely chalk drawing of a lady holding a birdcage. It was clearly executed by an artist who knew Boucher's style intimately, probably a member of his immediate circle.
