ATTRIBUTED TO BELLOCQ, E. J. (1873–1949)
Storyville portrait of a young woman, semi-nude, circa 1911–1913, likely printed 1930s or before. 8 x 10 inches (203 x 255 mm), printed on matte paper (which does not fluoresce under ultra-violet light), unsigned, the verso with a numeral (15) of unknown significance. The image in generally excellent condition, though with some minor silvering apparent at the print edges.
Belloccq was a New Orleans photographer whose work remained unknown to the general public until Lee Friedlander made prints from a cache of his glass plates in the 1960s. A commercial photographer, the plates for the eighty-nine erotic images on which his reputation rests were discovered in his desk after his death. They were taken in the New Orleans Storyville red-light district in about 1912. The subject of the present image is displayed lying with her eyes concealed by her hand; a curtain hangs behind her. Compositionally, the image is very much congruent with Bellocq's known body of work, with a hanging curtain or screen depicted behind her, a compositional device that Bellocq frequently used.
