Platt D. Babbitt: View of Niagara Falls with a rainbow over the Falls

Half-plate cased Ambrotype of Niagara Falls, with a depiction of the rainbow over the Falls, circa 1860. Plate 4 1/4 x 5 3/8 inches (11 x 14 cm). The Ambrotype housed in a fine ornamented leather case with clasps. The plate and case in excellent condition.
Compositionally, this is very much analogous to most of Babbit's work we have viewed, using his typical framing of the Falls: trees to the left, and a low stand of shrubs to the right, with the figures of the viewers in the foreground. A feature we have not previously noted is the mist-bow over the Falls themselves, which appears as a series of arcs in the image. These do not appear to have been drawn in, so far as we can determine, but appear to have been captured on the plate
