Autograph note initialed as President to a Congressman turned Marine.
Washington: 12 February 1952. Single-page note on one sheet of White House stationery, initialed "H.S.T.", 9 x 6 1/4 inches (23 x 15.5 cm), accompanied by the original envelope in Truman's hand. Usual folds, else fine and dark.
Rare autograph note from Truman as President, here congratulating Colonel Melvin Maas on receiving the prestigious Commander-in-Chief medal. Maas was a Minnesota Congressman when recalled into the Marines as Colonel during WWII (highly decorated, he retired a Major General). His optic nerve damaged by an enemy bomb, by 1951 he was completely blind. He continued to serve on the President's Committee on Employment of the Physically Handicapped when awarded the medal referenced here.
