Estate / Collection: Collection of a New York Surveyor

A Plan of a Parcel of ground belonging to Mr. John Kingston first John Minthorn, Dec'd Surveyed and laid out for said Kingston in to Lotts of ground. Manuscript map in ink on paper, circa 1769, with the following written below the above title "A map for 150 Lotts of ground formerly belonged to John Minthorn, Dec'd Surv'd 1757 by Laurens Littion (?) for John Kingston of New York the land Layeth on the East side of ye Frash Water." This text above a final text "John Kingston and others, the Mayor, Aldermen and Commonality of the City of New York/Release & Survey of severall streets in the Outward of the City of New York dated the 7th of February 1769." 33 x 26 inches (85 x 66 cm). The map is backed. Dust soiling and stains, marginal losses, tears, later markings within the image.
A detailed early map attributed to a surveyor whose name is difficult to make out - Laurence Littion (?), presenting 150 freshly laid-out in the Out Ward, near the Fresh Water Pond. The King's Road runs along the east side of the map, this road known later as Chatham Street and the Bowery. King's Road crosses Orange Street (now Baxter) and Mulberry and Mott Streets at their origination points. Cross Street runs through the center of the map (now Park Row). On the west side of the map, outside of the laid-out blocks, are two references to Fresh Water in the area of the pond. A charming small elevation drawing of a farmhouse is labeled "Bayard Staaten House," this on the farmland of Nicholas Bayard. A remarkable early survey.
