BERNERS (Dame JULIANA). A Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle. Chelsea: The Ashendene Press, 1903. One of 25 copies printed on vellum, from an overall edition of 175. Brick red niger morocco by F.P. (initials on rear lower dentelle, dated 1904), certainly the work of Florence Paget, who worked closely with the Press; upper cover lettered in gilt with the title (at head), press and date (at foot), patterns of three blind-tooled dots and angled lines where the edge of the covers meet the raised bands ( à la Cockerell, under whom she studied), spine in six compartments, stamped vertically with the title in the upper three compartments, broad dentelles with four gilt rules, vellum paste-downs and endpapers; later cloth-backed slipcase and chemise. 7 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches (19.75 x 13.5 cm); 48 pp., with title-page woodcut, several small cuts in text and the mark of the Press on the final page. The leather rather foxed and spotted, joints rubbed, the spine darkened, some minor toning and spotting to the multiple initial and terminal blanks, but the text of the book generally quite fresh and bright.

The text is taken from the Boke of St. Albans printed by Wynkyn de Worde in 1496, the first printed book on fishing in English. The blocks were cut by Charles Keates. Bibliography of the Ashendene Press 16 etc.
