Original brown cloth lettered in red. 12 x 9 3/4 inches (30.5 x 25 cm); viii, 855 pp., profusely illustrated, and with color folding map of Africa. The spine faded and with some amateur repair to corners, library markings removed from front and rear endpapers and title which has a 3 inch hole and a short tear not affecting text, some creases, light foxing to first and last leaves.
Edited by Cunard and dedicated to her friend Henry Crowther, this avant-garde anthology contains contributions by Samuel Beckett, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams and Theodore Dreiser; as well as African-American writers such as Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Arthur A. Schomburg, W.E.B. Du Bois, Walter White, William Pickens, W.C. Handy, Countee Cullen, and many others. Many copies are believed to have been destroyed in the Blitz.
