ROOSEVELT, THEODORE
Typed letter signed as President.
Washington: 23 November 1908. Single-page typed letter signed "Theodore Roosevelt" and with a six line autograph postcript on one bifolium of "The White House/Washington" stationery. 8 3/4 x 7 inches (22 x 17.5 cm). Usual folds and minor thumbsoiling to edges, the Roosevelt signature slightly weak compared to the dark postscript, the blue ink of the type very dark, fine overall.
Here President Roosevelt writes to Evelyn Baring, First Lord Comer, introducing W. Cameron Forbes ("He is a Harvard man and an old friend of mine. Incidentally he is a grand-son of Emerson") and reporting that he is currently Vice-Governor and will become Governor of the Philippines. Roosevelt closes hoping to see Cromer in England the following spring but adds in a lengthy autograph postscript: "Mr. Forbes' father's father was a representative in London for President Lincoln, in the effort to stop the sailing of certain Confederate ironclads..." Letters from Roosevelt invoking President Lincoln and the Civil War are rare.
