NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful auction of Prints and Multiples on April 30, 2024 that topped $1.3 million, surpassing expectations. Showcasing prints spanning the 17th century to the present day, the sale attracted new buyers and seasoned collectors with fine examples of Old Master prints, Modern European prints, American prints and works by Contemporary artists, in addtion to ceramics by Pablo Picasso.

Roy Lichtenstein
From the Estate of Elaine and James D. Wolfensohn was Roy Lichtenstein’s complete portfolio La Nouvelle Chute de L’Amerique (The New Fall of America), with text by poet Allen Ginsberg, that achieved $83,050. This important work comprises ten signed and numbered etchings and aquatints depicting ordinary imagery which the artist transforms into commentary on contemporary American culture utilizing his signature Pop style. Property of a New York Collection, Lichtenstein’s color lithograph Crying Girl from 1963 realized $60,800, doubling its $25,000-35,000 estimate. This popular image was inspired by a June 1963 panel that appeared in the romance comic book imprint, Secret Hearts, published by DC Comics. 

Picasso Ceramics
Also attracting attention was a group of ceramic vases, pitchers and plates by Pablo Picasso, led by Vase Deux Anses Hautes (Vase with Two High Handles, The Queen) from 1953 that sold for $44,800, surpassing its $20,000-40,000 estimate. Picasso was at his home in the south of France in 1946 when he visited George and Suzanne Ramie at their nearby Madoura Pottery factory and was entranced by their work. The following year he began to make his own ceramics there, eventually creating more than 3,000 objects over the next 25 years.

Auction Records
Among the exceptional results achieved at the sale were a number of new World Auction Records for the Print. These include:
  - Alex Katz, Ada in Hat, Color screenprint, 1990. Sold for a record $17,920.
  - Alex Katz, White Hat, Color screenprint, 1990. Sold for a record $9,600.
  - Damien Hirst, Renewal, Color etching and aquatint, 2009. Sold for a record $8,320.
  - Robert Mangold, I-VII, Complete set of seven color woodcuts, 1991-1992. Sold for a record $6,400.
  - Louise Nevelson, Untitled, Cast paper relief. Sold for a record $6,080.
  - Edvard Munch, Dr. Max Asch, Drypoint, 1895. Sold for a record $5,120.
