Map of three pieces of land situated at Greenwich in the Twelfth Ward of the City of New York belongin to Henry Eckford. Manuscript map in ink and colors, with the text in ink below the title "Surveyed Sept. 1826 by Dan'L Ewen City Surveyor" above "New York ... copied from a map filed in the office of the Register in & for the City & County of of New York Dec. 5th 1828/Edwin Smith City Surveyor." 26 x 30 inches (66 x 76 cm). The map is backed. Toned and dust soiled, some losses along extremities, tears, later markings within the image.
A survey showing 7th and 8th Avenues from 21st up to 26th Street. Interestingly, prices for the individual lots are recorded in a contemporary hand. Henry Eckford was a successful New York shipbuilder who served the U.S. Navy in the War of 1812 and extended significant credit to the U.S. for the building of defensive ships. Eckford came to build ships for foreign navies and secured a contract with the Ottoman Empire; he died suddenly in Constantinople on 12 November 1832.
