[NAPOLEON I]

(as "Nap"), dated Anvers, 3 May 1810. Single sheet on vellum, patent of arms conferring the order of Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur on Bourgeois de St. Paul. 16 1/4 x 20 5/8 inches (41 x 52 cm), engraved with manuscript additions including the armorial description, with the painted coat of arms (u.l.), docketed on verso by the Chancellor of the Senate, the whole housed in the original tin tube with the attached Napoleonic wax seal in the affixed cylindrical seal case. Some handling marks and creasing, minor wear and soiling, overall sound, a remarkable survival in the original case (the panel to open the case now detached).
The enoblement of Charles Louis Bourgeois de St. Paul is listed by de Genouillac in the Dictionnaire des anoblis, 1270-1868... the letters patent noted there as 13 May 1810. Elsewhere, he is noted as a commissaire des guerres de 1re classe.
