[AFRO-AMERICANA]
West Indian Illustrations of Shakespeare. Georgetown, Demerara [i.e. British Guiana]: James Thomson at The Argosy Office; and London: John Haddon & Co., n.d. [1870]. First edition. Original publisher's cloth, upper cover blocked in black, titling in gilt. 10 1/4 x 13 1/2 inches (27 x 34 cm), title and fifty uncolored plates. Slightly shaken, some wear, internally clean.
An extremely scarce work of satirical humor based on Shakespearian quotations, illustrated with supposed scenes of Guyanese life. The date is taken from OCLC, though the one citation we can find in the literature suggests 1885, without stating a source for this date. In any case, a rare and unusual Caribbean imprint.
Provenance:
Collection of Lincoln Kirstein
Sold for $750
Estimated at $600 - $900
