Estate / Collection: Collection of a New York Surveyor

[EAST VILLAGE]
A Map of a piece of Ground lying in the Out Ward of the City of New York, sold by the Commissioners of Forfeitures in three Lotts No. XXVII, XXVIII and XXIX the Property of Abijah Hammond Esqr.
Manuscript map in ink and colors on two sheets of joined paper with red lines and notations added later. With the following in ink below the title: "taken from a survey of the late De Lancy's Ground made by Evert Banker Junr and laid out into Lotts corresponding with the Streets on the General Map of this City/New York January 1801 by Charles Loss City Surveyor." This text above a note in red signed by City Surveyor Edwin Smith in 1845 indicating that the red lines present here are "the commissioners streets and avenues." 16 1/2 x 40 1/2 inches (42 x 100 cm). The map backed and with remnants of a silk border. Losses along extremities at center fold, dust soiling, later markings within the image.

An interesting map overlaying the commissioner's grid over the 1801 original. The map shows the lands of Abijah Hammond, formerly the Delancy Farm, reaching from Attorney Street to the west to Goerck and Mangin Streets shown as within the East River (these streets named for the surveyors responsible for the Mangin-Goerck plan about 1800).

Sold for $688
Estimated at $1,000 - $1,500
