Original pen and ink portrait of W.C. Fields.
An original pen and ink on illustration board caricature of W.C. Fields holding a cigar and with his finger in a shot glass and an acetate orange slip onlaid as his nose. Signed "Hirschfeld" at lower right and with a small "1" indicating the amount of Ninas hidden in the image. 22 x 18 inches (56 x 46 cm); matted and framed. Visually fine, the nose onlay slightly lifted, not examined out of frame.

Provenance: The Margot Feiden Gallery (label and original receipt on frame verso); acquired by the current consignor in 1994.

This very fine Al Hirschfeld caricature of the hard-drinking American comedian W.C. Fields was published on the cover of Drat! Being The Encapsulated View Of Life By W.C. Fields In His Own Words, 1969. Original Hirschfeld artwork with a collage element such as Fields' red nose are uncommon.
