The son of the great opera singer Feodor Chaliapin, Boris Chaliapin studied painting in Moscow and Paris and gained a reputation as a skilled portraitist. After moving to the United States, Chaliapin became known as "Mr. Time", supporting himself as an illustrator for Time Magazine. He created more than 400 cover images for the publication between 1942 and 1970.
