Blatas was inspired by the 1983 adaptation of Carmen, directed and choreographed by Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura. The film was well received in the United States where it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It was also influential in bringing Flamenco to a wider world audience. One of the pillars of Flamenco as an art form, Cristina Hoyos played Carmen in critically acclaimed ballet adaptations of Carmen.
