Estate / Collection: Collection of a New York Surveyor

MAERSCHALK, FRANCIS (attributed to). Survey Near Garden or First Street dated 1773. Manuscript survey map in ink on paper, with the following text in ink at upper left "Date of Indenture/Nov 18th 1773/Between City & Rector(?) & inhabitants of the city of" and at lower right "New York 30 Sept 1773 ... Made by/Mr. Francis Maerschalk." The map is backed. 15 3/4 x 21 inches (40 x 52 cm). Tears into image, stains, soiling and marginal losses, later markings in the image.
A scarce late colonial era survey attributed to Francis Maerschalk showing the proposed expansion of Greenwich Street westward further into the Hudson River. The low and high water marks are both noted on the map with the southern extent of Greenwich Street shown as water-covered. The map provides the traditional name of Greenwich Street along with the proposed renaming of it to First Street. The two two long streets parallel are here named Second and Third Street, these soonafter were known as Washington and West Streets. The layout presented here is not on Bernard Ratzer's 1766 survey which names streets in this area only up to Reade Street. Chapel Street shown here would later become West Broadway.
