British Royal Interest: Victorian Sterling Silver and Enamel Presentation Cigarette Case

Rectangular with hinged striker to top and hinged cover applied with the crowned arms of Queen Victoria of Great Britain, engraved To EPC from HRH for Lord Edward Pelham-Clinton, Master of the Queen's Household (1894-1901). Length 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm), approximately 4 ounces.

Lord Edward Pelham-Clinton (1836-1907), was second son of Henry Pelham-Clinton, 5th Duke of Newcastle. After a a military career with the Rifle Brigade where he served in the Crimea and then with tours of Canada and India, Clinton served as one term with the Liberals in Parliament before joining the Royal household first as Groom-in-Waiting to the Queen from 1881 to 1894 and then as Master of the Household until her death in 1901. Under King Edward VII, he reverted to role as Groom-in-Waiting holding the position until his own death in 1907.

Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger - Sold for $419,600
Highlighting the sale was Dutch artist Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger’s view of A Coastal Landscape with Dutch Frigates Exchanging Salutes that soared past its estimate of $60,000-80,000 to achieve a stunning $419,600. Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger (1601-1653) was one of the most important and influential Dutch marine painters of the 17th century. This sweeping view of ships off the coast of Holland, painted in the late 1640s, is a classic example of his late style, which emphasized the atmospheric effects of water and sky along the North Sea.
