[FINE BINDING]
Auctoris Latinae Linguae in unum redacti corpus.
St. Gervase: Haeredes Eustathii Vignon [i.e. Heirs of Eustace Vignon], 1602. Full brown calf, sides almost entirely covered with a lozenge of fleurons and leafy sprays centered on a coat of arms, matching cornerpieces, spine richly gilt, in the style of Clovis Eve. 9 x 6 1/2 inches (23 x 16 cm); [para]^[4] a-4a^[8] 4b^[4]. Corners rather rubbed, one corner exposed, joints restored and now again partially cracked, spine with restorations, holes of cloth ties at the fore-edge. Book label of Adolph Lewisohn.

The arms are noted by Olivier and Hermal (vol. VI, p.768) as "unidentified." The binding itself, a splendid example of à la fanfare decoration, is very much in the manner of Nicolas and Clovis Eve, the foremost bookbinders of the French Court. Though the binding is remarkable in effect, it seems that this is perhaps a Swiss production. This was sold in the Lewisohn sale at Parke-Bernet in 1940.
