First edition, first state with the printer's name set in two lines of Old English type, publisher's crimson cloth without the acorn device on spine (the acorn device is now considered indicative of a secondary binding); with a typed letter signed laid in. Publisher's red cloth. 7 1/4 x 4 3/8 inches (18.5 x 12.5 cm); [viii], 401, [1] pp. Spine dulled, faint trace of a removed ink "Vol. I" at spine center, some neat refurbishment to the covers evident, the front hinge restored at the gutter with Japanese tissue, and the whole likely resewn with new headbands (retaining original endpapers etc.).
The laid-in letter, to an autograph-seeker, is dated September 13th, 1926, on the author's business stationery.
