MAURICE, THOMAS. The History of Hindostan: Its Arts and Its Sciences, as Connected with the History of the Other Great Empires of Asia, During the Most Ancient Periods of the World...
London: W. Bulmer for the author, sold by R. Faulder [and T. Gardiner], 1795-1798. First edition. Two volumes, green publisher's cloth stamped in blind, rebacked in morocco (too early for an English publisher's cloth binding, this must represent a reissue from the original sheets). 11 x 8 1/2 inches (28 x 22 cm); 577 pp.; xxii, 707, [1] pp.; 19 plates, one folding. Rebinding rebacked as noted, the cloth somewhat worn and faded, some toning throughout, one plate of Krishna bound out of place, an uncut copy.

A curious work, one of the first to attempt to understand Hindu and Buddhist iconography, albeit with some eccentricities. Abbey Travel 668; Hill p. 319.

Sold for $188
Estimated at $300 - $500
