[MAP--BRITISH ISLES]
[BLAEU, JOAN]. Britannia Prout Divisa Fuit Temporibus Anglo-Saxonum Praesertim Durante Illorum Heptarchia. [Amsterdam: Joan Blaeu, circa 1645]. Engraved map, hand colored, central fold, framed. 16 3/8 x 20 1/2 (41 x 52 cm) to the neatline. Sunned, a one-inch tear along the central fold, taped to mount.
Blaeu's decorative map of the British Isles was based on an earlier map by John Speed, first published in 1611. However Blaeu reengraved the historical Anglo-Saxon vignettes in a more ornate Dutch old master manner. Blaeu's map was closely copied by his rival Jan Jansson in the following year, but with rhumb lines and compass roses added to the seas. Shirley 549.
