Cast with the name JEAMES BUTLAR [sic} MADE ME, the waist with a band of stylized fleur-de-lys and crosses, linked by scrolls; together with an associated pestle. Height 5 1/8 inches (13 cm), diameter 6 1/4 inches (15.8 cm), length of pestle 8 inches (20.3 cm).
Literarture:
Henning, Arthur C., 'Mortars by English Church Bell Founders', The Connoisseur, June 1934, p. 395, No. ix, which had been on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Henning links two bells, dated 1632, at West Thurrock, Essex, with identical forms of decoration, neither with the founder's name but suggests that they might have been the work of the same maker.
