Philadelphia: 2 August 1793. One page autograph letter signed "Edm: Randolph" on a bifolium, with address panel in Randolph's hand, 9 x 7 1/2 inches (23 x 19 cm). Fine with a large dark signature, usual folds and some very faint toning.
Randolph, as the First Attorney General of the U.S. during Washington's first term, here writes seeking a loan from Henry Drinker, a prominent Philadelphia Quaker and shipping magnate: "I have been greatly embarrassed by some protest bills of John Warder. Let me beg favor of you to lend me, until the 15th of this month, a thousand dollars ... you will confer a lasting obligation..." The letter bears a bold signature and letters from this period are scarce.
