[CIVIL WAR - AFRICAN-AMERICAN REGIMENT]
Muster-roll ledger recording details of Company G of the 28th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry
. Circa 1864-65. Printed ledger accomplished in mansucript. Original reverse calf panelled in blind, the upper cover with a manuscript "G" and a black label reading "Company Descriptive Book" (with a contemporary label from McLaughlin Brothers, Philadelphia to front pastedown). 15 1/2 x 10 1/8 inches (39.5 x 26 cm); with entries on approximately 50 pages. Generally worn with the covers nearly detached and the front flyleaf detached but present, stains and offsetting within.
A very interesting ledger containing important information on a well-known African-American regiment. The 28th Regiment originated from Indiana and saw substantial action throughout 1864-65. This ledger records the physical descriptions, entry and discharge dates, and details of the deaths of those who succumbed to enemy action or illness. Also of note are interesting manuscript medical treatments for cholera, whooping cough, etc.
