Map of Land in the Tenth Ward of the City of New York the Property of the Heirs of N. Gouverneur. Manuscript plan in ink on paper, circa 1802, with "Map of Land in the Tenth Ward of the City of New York the Property of the Heirs of N. Gouverneur" in ink at upper center above the names of the inheritors in another hand, the plan not signed by the surveyor. 20 1/2 x 25 inches (52 x 63 cm). The map is backed. Edgewear and losses touching words along the border, some later markings within the image, soiling.

The heart of today's Lower East Side, here presented about 1802 following the death of Nicholas Gouverneur. The map shows from the north Rivington, Delancey, Broom and Grand Streets and from the west Fourth Street, Eldridge, Allen, Orchard, Ludlow, Essex and Norfolk Street. These lands had formed a portion James Delancey's Farm and is seen as "Delancy's Square" on Bernard Ratzer's 1766 survey. Broom Street was named about 1804. Nicholas Gouverneur (1753-1802) was married to Hester (Kortright) Gouverneur (1757-1842), and their several children are listed on the map.
