Containing an Account of the Country upwards of Two Thousand Miles West of the Christian Parts of North America, the Indians, Manners, Habits, and many other particulars ... To which is added the interesting history of Charles Mortimer, an American tale. N.p.: "s.n., "Printed in the year 1797." Later printing (first issued 1788), all the editions are very rare. Old full calf. 5 1/8 x 3 1/4 inches (13 x 8 cm); vi, [7]-81, [1] pp. Front joint just starting, occasional minor tissue restorations, mostly marginal, throughout but an attractive copy.
This is the Eberstadt copy, offered as lot 178 in catalogue 168 ($350). Vail (1117) located only the copy in the Deering Collection, though others are now indicated in the temporary ESTC. Although frequently termed fictitious, it includes the true narrative of John Vandeleur, a Dutchman who was captured by the Indians of the Pacific Northwest in 1784 and lived some years among them after taking a native wife. There has been extensive conjecture that it is an authentic and very early overland narrative. Streeter believed Vandeleur to have been the likely author, and the Eberstadts noted that Vail also believed it to have been based on a genuine narrative. Evans 33615.
