Autograph letter signed.
Norfolk: 18 December 1858. Two page autograph letter signed "D.G. Farragut" on the recto and verso of one sheet, the letter addressed to Paul Langdon at Wilmington, N.C. 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches (24 x 19 cm); with the original mailing envelope. Usual folds, else fine.
In this pre-Civil War letter, Farragut requests that Langdon join him on the ship Brooklyn, of which he was recently named captain. In the letter, Farragut reports receiving Langdon's "unsatisfactory note ... for you do not appear to be inclined to down in the gulf & for which I certainly don't blame you..." Farragut closes offering to assist Langdon with passage to California. Antebellum letters from the great admiral are rare.
