A school book history of Hanover and Brunswick with royal provenance. Ernst August was the fifth son of King George V of England and Hanover. After his brother, William IV died in 1837, Ernst August's niece, Queen Victoria, succeeded to the throne of England. However, Victoria was prohibited from the Hanoverian throne by German Salic Law, and so Ernst August became the king of Hanover, ending the longstanding personal union between the two states. Published in the same year as his coronation, the English-born Ernst August must have needed a book like this to brush up on the his new kingdom's history.
