OSGOOD, WILLIAM
Indenture signed (signature possibly secretarial). Approximately 13 x 8 1/4 inches (33 x 22 cm), single sheet, written both sides. 42 lines recto, 21 lines verso, plus various legal appurtenances at the foot, all written in black ink (now faded to brown), signed in Salisbury [Massachusetts], the 7th (?) day of July, 1693. Minor soiling, slight losses at edges of folds, but an interesting Colonial document.
The first William Osgood was a Pilgrim who settled in Salisbury, though the William in this document is almost certainly his son, a sawyer also of Salisbury. Numerous legal instruments relating to him are noted in the literature. The document pertains to his purchase, from Daniel Davis of Newbury, of a life interest in certain lands and waters, and explicitly mentions saw mills. Colonial legal documents are quite uncommon in commerce.
