Modern three-quarters morocco gilt over marbled boards, marbled endpapers. 8 1/4 x 5 inches (21 x 13 cm); with half-title and errata leaf, 40 engraved plates including the engraved title (dated 1850), with most first issue points except that 'screwed' has been corrected to 'scream' on p. 132. With the following points: chapter XXVII on p. 282 instead of p. 283 as listed in the contents; p.16, line 1 & p. 225, line 22 with 'recal' instead of 'recall'; p. 19, 12 lines from the bottom "cha pter ;ut"; p. 387, 6 lines from the bottom 'coroboration' instead of 'corroboration'; p. 472, 13 lines from the bottom, there is no closing of the quotation marks; first state of the engraved vignette title (i.e. dated); printer's imprint to final text leaf. Spotting and toning to plates, a few plates trimmed close, a few stray stains, bookplate of Robin Bradley Martin.
