A finely colored example of Blaeu's map of Asia
Estate / Collection: An Upper East Side Map Collector

BLAEU, WILLEM. Asia Noviter Delineata. [Amsterdam: Willem Janszoon Blaeu, c. 1635]. Hand-colored engraved map, text on verso in Dutch with hand-colored and gilt initial, from the Dutch language edition of Blaeu's "Atlas Major." Sheet measures 19 x 23 1/4 inches. Framed. Vertical central fold, faint toning in margins, colored initial on verso lightly bleeding through paper.
Blaeu's map of Asia was based on the most up-to-date information available in the seventeenth century, largely thanks to his access to the Dutch East India Company's charts of the region. However, some interesting inconsistencies appear on the map, such as Japan (here called "Bungo") being oriented horizontally, and Korea being depicted as an island rather than a peninsula. The map includes ten vignettes that show various cultures' peoples and costumes along the left and right borders, and it has nine bird's-eye view vignettes of major cities along the top edge.
