NEW YORK, NY -- The semiannual Doyle+Design® auctions showcase Modern and Contemporary furniture, design and art by some of the most prominent designers, makers and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Among the furniture are pieces by such designers as Le Corbusier, Josef Hoffman, Hans Wegner, Aero Saarinen, Diego Giacometti, George Nelson, Arne Jacobsen, Charles and Ray Eames, Paul Evans, George Nakashima, Finn Juhl, and Philip and Kelvin Laverne. Design offers examples in metal, glass, ceramics and silver by Franz Hagenauer, Piero Fornasetti, Gio Ponti, Dale Chihuly and others. Also included in these sales are Modern and Contemporary paintings, drawings and sculpture by emerging artists and quiet jewels by prominent artists.

Hans Wegner (1914-2007) designed the iconic Papa Bear Chair, AP-19, in 1951 for the Danish firm A.P. Stolen. It received its name from a critic who described the arms as “great bear paws embracing you from behind” (est. $5,000-7,000). The chair is flanked by pieces from a generation earlier that capture the new industrial look sweeping furniture design in the 1920s and 1930s – Eileen Gray’s E1027 adjustable table
(est. $200-300) and Edouard-Wilfred Buquet’s floor lamp (est. $2,000-4,000), both designed in 1927. Master glassmaker and jeweler René Lalique’s (1860-1945) Sauterelles vase designed in 1912 of frosted glass with selected polished edges brings to life grasshoppers depicted in their natural habitat on slender blades of grass (est. $2,000-3,000).

Creating dreamlike depictions of the rural Midwest, Joe Andoe (b. 1955) was instrumental in revitalizing realistic painting following the heyday of Minimalism and Geometric Abstraction. His loose, beatific images breathe new life into American landscape painting
(est. $1,800-2,200).
