This work is one of approximately 15 surviving paintings of the 50 commissioned by Jonathan Tyers for the supper boxes at Vauxhall Gardens, Britain's first commercial pleasure garden. It depicts a scene from Charles Coffey's ballad opera The Devil to Pay or The Wives Metamorphos'd, an adaptation of Thomas Jevon's play The Devil of a Wife (1686), first performed, with enormous success at Drury Lane Theatre, London on August 6, 1731. The Devil to Pay was a breakthrough role for Kitty Clive, who later became one of the founding members of David Garrick's acting company.
