Lot 228
Prince Paul Troubetzkoy
Russian, 1866-1938
The Younger Daughter of Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt, 1910
Signed Paul Troubetzkoy on the base, with Valsuani foundry mark
Bronze, dark brown patina
Height 20 3/4 inches (52.7 cm).
Acquired by the mother of the present owner in the 1960s.
William Kissam Vanderbilt II (1878-1944), a member of the prominent American Vanderbilt family, commissioned several bronze portraits from Troubetzkoy around 1910. These included standing portraits of William and his wife Virginia (née Fair), their two daughters, and their thoroughbred horse. The works likely were executed during one of the family's many trips to Paris, prior to Troubetzkoy's exhibitions throughout the United States in 1911 and later and his eventual relocation to the country at the outbreak of World War I.
In addition to the present standing portrait, a cast of which was exhibited in New York in 1911, Troubetzkoy also executed a portrait bust of the sitter. The plaster is preserved in the Museo del Paesaggio, Verbania, Italy. Another bronze cast of the present portrait was sold Sotheby's, London, June 4, 2013, lot 404.
Catalogue of sculpture by Prince Paul Troubetzkoy, exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, February 1 to February 28, 1912, Nos. 29 & 30.
