Washington: GPO, 1876. First edition, quarto format. Original blue pebbled cloth, the spine gilt lettered. 11 5/8 x 9 inches (29.5 x 23 cm); 3 folding lithographed maps, 2 natural history plates. Spine darkened, lightly rubbed, a fine copy.
Ludlow was chief Engineer of the Dakota Department of the Corps of Engineers. "In 1875, Captain William Ludlow made a reconnaissance to the Yellowstone Park ... obtaining a very accurate measurement of the height of the Yellowstone Falls."
