NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle's two-day auction of Asian Works of Art on March 19-20, 2024 saw international bidding driving strong prices for exceptional examples of porcelain, jade, textiles, bronzes and furniture. Scheduled during Asia Week New York 2024, this highly-anticipated sale presented the arts of China, Japan and elsewhere in Asia dating from the Neolithic Period through the 20th century.
Session I Highlights
Chinese Furniture in the March 19 session was highlighted by a Ming Dynasty black lacquer table with delicate mother-of-pearl inlay that soared over its $8,000-10,000 estimate to achieve $95,750. Property from the Estate of Renee Meyers from a Manhattan Apartment Decorated by Albert Hadley, the elegant table displayed an imperial level of quality in its design and decoration.
Chinese Jades featured an exquisite 18th-19th century pendant estimated at $2,500-3,500 that realized a stunning $54,400. Signed by the carver, Lu Zigang, and fashioned from jade of a superb color, the pendant was incised with an ancient poem dating from the Jin Dynasty (266–420) by poet Lu Kai titled Zeng Fan Ye. It reads:
"Picking a flower while passing a courier.
Missing thenceforth, the one in North.
Nothing from South, but Spring blooms."
"折枝逢驿使，寄与陇头人；
江南无所有，聊赠一枝春。
Chinese Textiles from the Collection of Atlanta contemporary fiber artist Jon Eric Riis featured an exceptionally rare Chinese embroidered silk "Flying Tiger" banner from the Kangxi Period that sold strongly for $51,200.
