Notable DC / Mid-Atlantic Collections & Estates at Doyle

The Estate of Kathleen Emmet Darman of McLean featured a newly rediscovered work by Jean-Francois Millet (French, 1814-1875) that achieved $642,600—A World Auction Record for a Nude by Millet. Out of the public eye since 1910, Young Woman Asleep, Seen from the Back was painted around the time of Millet’s first success at Paris Salon in 1847.

Jewelry from the Collection of Alice Appleton Hay was highlighted by a Cartier ring set with an exceptional Burma ruby of 6.29 carats that achieved $1,314,500—one of the highest prices per carat ever achieved for a ruby at auction. The daughter-in-law of Secretary of State John Hay, she was descended from titans of banking and industry, and her collection provided a glimpse into the luxurious lives of America’s Gilded Age elite.

Property from the Library of William Safire comprised an extensive offering of fascinating material, including literature, politics and American history collected by the celebrated Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Presidential speechwriter and New York Times columnist.

Doyle has long served the DC community as auctioneer of the collections of Kennedy Center chairman Roger Stevens, Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley, Ambassador to Russia Nicholas Ruwe, arts philanthropist Polly Fritchey, journalist Howard K. Smith, society hostess Dorothy 'Doda' deWolf, and property from the personal collections of C.W. and Marjorie Merriweather Post at Hillwood Estate.
